Wintery York

I was asked by work to attend a meeting in York the other day – so with my best bargaining head on I agreed to this if I could have the rest of the day off, as York in the run up to Christmas is obviously going to be something quite nice.

Of course, like the true train geek I am I also had to squeeze in a little visit to the Railway museum. It would have been possible to spend all day here, but I just had a short wander round. It was nice to see the Mallard again along with 55019 and Sir Nigel Gresley under repair.

Something I have wanted to go and see in York, with my slight obsession with Canals and waterways is the Foss Barrier. Sadly, it had obviously not done its job so well, and as is not uncommon significant areas on the banks of the Ouse and the confluence with the Foss were flooded and I could not get near it!

This made for some interesting shots. There’s some here from the river bank and also a couple from the walls and from Cliffords Tower. I processed these quite heavily to bring out the stormy impact of the skies and water.

Later in the evening made for some great photo opportunities. The Shambles at night is, of course, ubiquitous in the repertoire of many photographers. That is perhaps because it Just has to be done. I managed to get some good shots of the market, pushing the ISO up.

After walking about and a couple of pints I brought out the Lensbaby and got a bit tarty with the abstracts. All in all a good days photography, mostly on expenses…
