Black and White Cambridge

Black and White Cambridge

Reading Time: 2 minutesWhile I am busy archiving photos and generally sorting stuff out a little, I found these scans. Every year at High School we had a “Special Week” – with various activities. One year was a photography workshop where we took and developed out own films.

Scotch Chrome

Scotch Chrome

Reading Time: 4 minutesI have been going back a bit to get some more ‘blog style posts onto this site (something I originally aimed to do) – inspired in part by managing to edit a good selection of film scans which have been hanging about for ages, and

Revlog Kolor Wierdness

Revlog Kolor Wierdness

Reading Time: 2 minutesNot content with this being a random effect from poor light seals (or indeed poor construction) it is now possible, courtesy of Revlog to purchase film that is pre exposed to give these (and other) effects. What a time to be alive. I am being

Purple Haze

Purple Haze

Reading Time: 2 minutesOnce again, the lure of the Lomo hits… It’s funny, I have such a love/hate relationship with this idea. My practise totally encompasses mad experimentation, but the obsessive commercialisation of it from the Lomography movement is somehow distatseful. Nonetheless, when I happened across some Lomochrome

Splitzed and hacked and filtered…

Splitzed and hacked and filtered…

Reading Time: 4 minutesAnd so, back again to the dreaded Lomography. It is funny how it always ends up there.  One thing I will say is that the Lomography crowd have an almost insatiable desire for hacking things, making cameras do weird and wonderful effects and sometimes I

Sepia Sprockets

Sepia Sprockets

Reading Time: 4 minutesFollowing on from my post on stand development in Rodinal a few days ago, this seems as good an opportunity as any to write about another film for which I used this process, along with some digital trickery to create some exciting hybrid images. The

Fine Art Monochrome – Nature Fantasies

Fine Art Monochrome – Nature Fantasies

Reading Time: 2 minutesThese images came from one of my experiments – I put a roll on Ilford Pan F into a Fujica AX-1 SLR. Being a lovely fine grained slow film I thought I would play with some fine art style nature imagery. This is the result,

Alien Landscapes

Alien Landscapes

Reading Time: 3 minutesKodak Ektachrome Professional Infrared EIR Film has become a bit of a holy grail for experimental photographers, and I have seen it command prices of over £100 on ebay. I was lucky enough to get hold of a roll in a mixed bundle of old films (along with 2 HIE Black and White infra-red rolls for about £14 – I guess the guy didn’t know what he had!).

EIR is a ‘false colour’ technical film, coated on an Estar base with a sensitivity from 380-900nm – this covers the full visible spectrum and some of the near-UV and all of the near-IR range. Near Infra-red wavelengths are rendered as a deep visible red, and due to the ‘Woods Effect’ (reflection of n-IR wavelengths from foliage) this means that foliage comes out in this colour creating strange and bizarre visual effects.

Through Moving Windows

Through Moving Windows

Reading Time: 3 minutesI spend a lot of time travelling on busses and trains. Looking out of the windows provides a unique view of the surroundings which is detached and dispassionate, a different reality. You see places that you may walk through on different days, or that you

The Wedding (Revisited)

The Wedding (Revisited)

Reading Time: 2 minutesI also shot a bit of film at the wedding I have talked about in my last post – largely for amusement and experimentation. I think these have actually come out very well – but I can’t imagine shooting a whole wedding event to film,

Kruidvat Keroppi

Kruidvat Keroppi

Reading Time: 2 minutesPardon? I appreciate this sounds like some utterance one might expect from a frog… Which I guess is fitting as Keroppi is in fact a frog and this relates to a quirky little Keroppi branded camera. I loaded this with Kruidvat 200 film – I

How to fuel your GAS – A buying guide for second hand cameras

How to fuel your GAS – A buying guide for second hand cameras

Reading Time: 10 minutesI have come to accept that I have GAS and I cannot control it. GAS? Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I had to put this in because it is the oldest puerile joke among photographers, but now it is out of the way I will get on
