Getting Wide
Over the last couple of years of shooting, Ihave developed quite a thing for epic wide-angle scenes. I love the amount you can fit in and the really exagerated perspectives of wide angle shots.
Having managed to be quite good with my svaings this year I was in the lucky position of being able to buy such a lens – the Sigma 10-20mmm f/3.5 HSM. I’ve heard realoly good things about Sigma lenses, as an alternative to the Canon offerings – they are certainly cheaper (though at a shade over £500 for this, I am expecting a reasonable amount.
So far I have not been dissapointed. After a near emergency where the filter I bought from SRB was too deep and nearly broke the lens (thank god I am gentle and anxious and noticed as I screwed it on), I’ve taken this out and played about with a set that talks to my Backstreets and Rooftops project with these perspective on steroids shots in Hyde Park.
I went out a second time, when we have had a sprinkling of snow and grabbed a couple more round Hyde Park and on campus. One thing to be aware of is with such a wide angle you need to be quite careful of lens-flare (unless you want it) but shooting contre-jour as I have on Woodhouse Moor and St George’s Field has made some epic results.
I’m looking forward to playing with this some more.
