PY3 – Hansa Yellow 10G

Arylide Yellow 10G, Hansa Yellow Light, Lemon Yellow

This is a synthetic, organic monoazo (arylide) pigment. It is also commonly known as Hansa Yellow which is a trademark name from 1909 when this series of pigments was discovered.

Chemistry

The IUPAC name for PY3 is 2-[(4-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-3-oxobutanamide, the chemical formula is C16H12Cl2N4O4 and the structural formula is as shown below. [Pubchem]

Colour

It is a light valued, cool, zesty greenish yellow.

For Mixing purposes it can be defined as

  • Cool Yellow
  • Green Yellow

In use

The characteristics is use would be expected to be:

  • Marginally Lightfast
  • Semitransparent
  • Moderately Staining
  • No Granulation
  • Moderately susceptable to blooming
  • Marginally active in wet

though these can be influenced by the individual preparation.

It has a reasonably high tinting strength, making these colours useful for mixes, and does not exhibit much drying shift or lose chroma when extended. However sources concur that it can fade, tending to dull and brown over time.

McEvoy suggests this to be a good “primary yellow” where a set of cool primaries is sought.

Used in

This is used in the Mungyo Colours 871 Cadmium Yellow Right (from the Nostalgia of Pastels range), and 802 Lemon Yellow (from the Passion for Masterpieces range) in sets that I own, and is widely used for a Lemon Yellow hue in other brands.

I have used this in my own single pigment Dr. Rounds Hansa Lemon, and in the mixed pigment Spring Green, Summer Green, Autumn Green, Winter Green.

It is also used in Cass Art’s own brand Lemon Yellow Oil Paint.
