Ela Orleans at Wharf Chambers
I was invited down to this lovely intimate gig at Wharf Chambers to shoot a set of images capturing the night.
Something a little more chilled than many of the events I shoot for this project – I almost didn’t include it on this site, but the feel of the images fits I think. So here it is.
I was invited down to this lovely intimate and very underground gig by the promoter to take some shots of the night. Aside from the normal struggles with the LED spotlights (especially as I was not using a flash so as to not disrupt the atmosphere) I’ve created some varied images – using a slightly different feel to for each artist.
Neil Campbell opened the night, playing noise. But noise of the best kind, building loops and textures into a full on glorious aural assault. There was very little light here, so I was somewhat limited in what I could do, but I have gone for a bit of a lo-fi look here.
Ygrec followed. I enjoyed their music, very edgy guitar pop, but I have to say their slight lack of experience showed through a little – they seemed very nervous on stage which made it a little hard to discern what was designed to be on the edgy side, or what was nerves. I’ve letf these also quite raw, but played a little with the colours on stage.
Ela Orleans was the headliner. Deep trip-hop, ambient, soulful soundscapes. I was told she would be a bit camera shy, and also it is obviously a little harder to create dynamic images of a solo electronic artist like this – I have payed with a rage of shots, but also attempted to capture more of the ambience of the event. The shot with the vertical blind like lights is my overall favourite.
