Thwaite Mills and Post Industrial Regeneration

I’ve been deveoping quite an interest in photographing some of Leeds Industrial Heritage, and of course we have a fair set of museums which are quite good for entertaining small children. One of these, though a fair way out and only open occasionally is Thwaite Mills, one of the best remaining working water mills in England. This is an amazing building, of some scale.

The inside is a mixture of old industrial artifacts and a few reconstructed rooms. The water mill in action is quite intense, though it looks incredibly ricketty!

We walked back along the canal. Here the industrial buildings are more modern, huge riverside warehouses overhanging the water, and storage tanks. A small footbridge leads seemingly nowhere.

This area is undergoing a lot of development, aiming to be a new south Leeds district at Knowsthorpe and it will be interesting to see what comes from this.

I’m aiming to try and get some more records of this area, South Leeds has always been a bit of a mystery to me, but it has a lot of interesting areas and is a melting pot of deveopment in and around the brownfield sites.
