Woodside Quarry

Having been to a couple of parties here, I have been meaning for some time to visit here for some photography. With the Indian summer this last few days I’ve taken the opportunity to do so in the sunshine.

Clayton Quarry, or more correctly Woodside Quarry, is a large sandstone quarry, between Ireland Wood and Horsforth active from at least the 1930s until perhaps the 1970s (there is little clear infomation I can find).

It now lies derelict – there are footpaths through the woods at the perimeter and the main site is easily accessible.

It’s quite some place – it is almost like being transported to the set of a Mad Max movie or some other post-apocalyptic scrubland, with a mixture of derelict machinary from the mining and more recent rubbish. I really enjoyed using the Sigma 10-20mm here to capture these classic wide angle dereliction shots

Sadly, as all these things must be it is likely to be developed soon, though I understand planning debates have been ongoing for some time.

  • Looking back on this post. Development well and truly underway now, and a great place lost to endless new-builds.
