Woodland Paths and Welsh Rocks

For what is essentially a fairly unassuming little path, the track that I walked up past The Lizard nature reserve in Wymondham has seen quite a bit of artistic action and has now prompted me to take on a few similar scenes. So after the oil painted version and a few sketches elsewhere I thought I would give it a go. One thing led to another and a couple of other paintings of similar paths sprung up too – I am pleased with the Edale painting as this had been scaring me for a while.

I have to say these are very much something that shows where better paper = better results. The 450gsm Waterford I used here has really lifted these up, really maintaining the transparency of the colours. Just a shame it is so expensive….

Alongside these I also decided to paint some rocks in Cwm Penmachno that I have been meaning to have a crack at for a while. I am on and off playing about with rocks a little for their colours and textures, which led to the second picture here.

This photo of rocks at Prestatyn (take hungover at Hammerfest some years ago) has been on my bathroom wall for some time. I have been exploring with creating some of my own granulating colours and before blending the pigments I tried some mixes from the base colours. This left a really great set of test paints perfectly suited to the rocks.

On the subject of rocks and water, I’ll just add in this little wave sketch I did the other day, loosely following a tutorial in a book I found in Oxfam. This is something I have now started playing with a little more – expect some breaking waves in the future.
