Lincoln in Watercolour
Of course, I took the photos from Lincoln, to work from for some watercolours.
All of these are from random phone pictures in the end. The end of the weekend we went down to look round the waterfront, as this is close to the station – a view like this can be as abstract, or as detailed as you like, but half close your eyes and the colours and shapes become the main visual focus, rather than detail.
I took this approach with Brayfords Pool, playing with the lights and reflections on the almost dusk.
I was very taken by East Bight, it looks such an idyllic little street. The name intrigues me as the term is normally associated with coastlines, but the street does curve round the cathedral, so I guess this is where it comes from.
I am still struggling with perspective in scenes like this, but I’m pleased with the feel of the picture, even if it is slightly askew.
The final picture is a bit of an idea in progress. The sunset, whizzing through the Lincolnshire countryside on the train, was sublime and I wanted to capture this. Like the attempts at Kippford I an not quite sure watercolour is the medium, but I need to play with the idea. Getting dark values in watercolour is tricky, and while saturated colours are easy enough in their place getting the feel of these has been difficult. Again, it is working out how to make a photograph into a painting, that represents the view.
Anyway, this is the journey home.
