Dewsbury to Mirfield

Further to the eventual aim of walking all the Yorkshire Canals, we set of on another canal walk, this time with the Aim of Dewsbury to (at least) Mirfield. As I have said before, though there are some reasonably interesting Industrial buildings, Dewsbury is not on of the nicest parks of West Yorkshire, and while the Saviletown marina can look quite pretty with the boats, the canal itself is a little on the grotty side.

At Least, that is until the junction with the Calder Hebble Navigation the winding hole at Thornhill Double Locks on Long Cut is quite impressive Though this stretch is quite enveoped in Thornhill Lees it manages to feel a little bit more like the countryside.

The Disused Crigglestone viaduct is the most impressive of the structures over the canal at this point, and the Calder and Hebble Canal Bridge, carrying the Huddersfield Line is also rather impressive. After this we are into typical West Yorkshire canal countryside.

At the end of this section the Thornhill Flood Lock connects the canal back to the River Calder.

The path along the Calder from here to Ravensthorpe is fallen into some disrepair and is quite overgrown and mucky. For this reason we crossed the Railway on Calder Road and followed the track to Ladywood Lakes, through some woods.

From here there canal continues into Mirfield.

Past Battyeford Lock and the Marina the canal rejoins the river at Newgate Bridge on the southern side oif Mirfield. There’s a strong boating presence here.
