Cable Street and Other Riots
Back in London again. Meeting again on St Mary Axe I wandered past the Lloyds Building and Leadenhall Market. I was struck by this mkeshift protest memorial to Ian Tomlinson, the newpaper seller murdered (and I will state my opinion here) by the police recently. I hope that as the sign states we fine out “who killed Ian Tomlinson”. Having experienced (albeit, and thankfully lower level) Police Brutality in Leeds I agree with everything on that statement.
This leads nicely in a way to my eventual aim for the day which was to go and seek out the Cable Street Mural. The Battle of Cable Street in 1936 is presented as a clash of working class people against the British Union of Fascists, but it’s also important to remember that the Metropolitan Police were protecting the British Union march and this was also a battle against the police.
Anyway I got the DLR out of Bank. I have to say (in a slightly boyish manner) that as a livelong lover of The London Underground the way the DLR line rises from the deepest platforms of Bank station and erupts out onto the viaducts of the DLR is great! I took the DLR to Shadwell and walked back along Cable Street to find it and then back to the South Bank for a bit.
All in all, another London mission acomplished, courtesy of expenses!
